An initiative to Commemorate 100 Years since World War 1 by creating 100 miles of walks around Kent - here are links to the two local walks:
Launch of Walk 100- Kent wide event
The event will take place over the last week end of February so that communities can decide whether to hold their walks on either Saturday the 24th or Sunday 25th of February 2018, or both days. As the trails are self guided we are only planning to hold one guided trail in each of our 30 locations and then to have a central point where people can collect a trail map to guide themselves. On each of the trails we are going to place 3 poppies at random stops and the aim is for people to find the poppies as they follow the trail and take a photograph of the location. We are hoping to encourage people to tag their photographs and upload them to twitter as a Kent wide wall publicising the community resource the trails provide across Kent. Everyone who walks the trails and takes photos will be entitled to a Walk 100 pin. Our very ambitious aim is to have 100 people in each location walk their local trail over the week end.
We will not be able to achieve this target without the help of local communities and volunteers, but that has very much been the ethos of our project so far. We are trying to have the planning for the event finalised by the end of January 2018 so that we can arrange insurance, inform the local safety committees of our plans and provide as much support as possible to the volunteers who are running each event. Some groups have been very proactive and have arranged for local dignitaries to attend the event but we really do need help so that as many of the local communities are represented as possible.
Although we have not pushed the publicity so far we already have had members of the public signing up to participate, which is very encouraging.
In every location for the event to take place we will need to arrange:-
- A central location from which participants can collect their trail leaflet and to which they can return having completed the trail to collect their pin.
- Two volunteers to guide a trail for 15 participants. We will provide training events so that people know what they have to do- these will be across Kent during late January and early February..
- To arrange the placement of the poppies at random locations.
- Promotion and publicity to encourage people to sign up to participate so that we have an idea of the numbers- we will provide and post out posters.
If you want to make sure that your local trail is included in our plans please can you contact us with any suggestions of venues, ideas or offers of help? Please can you publicise as widely as possible to any local groups. Our contact for this will be please head your e-mail with the location you wish to support.
