Being with an expert, however, brought it all to life. For instance, yellow rattle, being a parasitic plant, indicates a healthy wildflower meadow as it drains nutrients from the soil, which makes perfect conditions for a variety of native species.

We inspected the much-maligned ragwort, heaving with cinnabar caterpillars, and a tiny snail that lives on the top of waving grasses and endures dry conditions by closing down. Skirting the edge of the golf course, Sue pointed out the rare plant species that thrive on sandy soil, then she led us along the coast road, where other rare varieties of orchids could be glimpsed – altogether we saw four species (all a bit dessicated, but never mind). All in all it was a marvellous morning, and nobody got hit by golf balls!

Two planning applications are worth looking at: CT148AG (ref 25/000672) – an application to build 4 airbnb properties on the campsite, and CT148DU – the Kingsdown beach huts. The comments on those are well worth reading, as they are highly informed, and you might like to add to them.

Meanwhile have a great summer, and put 8th October in your diaries, which is the date of our AGM!
